The world’s best-selling car in 2013 was the Ford Focus. Introduced in 1998, the compact Focus is a front-wheel drive car currently available in six models, plus a more expensive electric model with a 107 kW electric motor and 23 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery.

Another popular Ford is the front-wheel drive Fiesta, which has been around in a variety of guises since 1976. Ford is estimated to have shifted over 16 million Fiestas since its launch, and the ST model won the Best Car prize at the 2013 Top Gear Awards.

Just behind the Focus in terms of sales is the compact Toyota Corolla, known in the UK as the ‘Auris’ – since its launch way back in 1966, Toyota has sold more than 40 million Corollas, and it was for many years the world’s top-selling passenger vehicle.

A relative newcomer to the list of best-sellers is the compact Chevrolet Cruze, launched in 2008 and the American giant’s first truly global model. Chevrolet claims that it is the most economical car in America, and it is certainly the first car in its class with 10 standard airbags.

The Volkswagen Golf super-mini is legendary for its reliability. It has been a bestseller around the world since its launch in 1974, and the GTI version of the car has led the way for all other ‘hot hatches’ to follow. The Golf won the World Car of the Year award in 2009 and 2013.

The Golf’s little brother is the Polo, produced since 1975 with a number of facelifts. Now available in six different models and with seven different engines, it won the World Car of the Year award in 2010.

Another popular Volkswagen is the Jetta, a large, affordable saloon introduced in 1979, and now available in three different models and with four different engines. In April 2014, Volkswagen announced that the Jetta had become its top-selling model.

The Toyota Camry was launched in 1982 as a compact car, although the name has been used for a mid-sized family car since 1991. The Camry is particularly popular in the United States, Australia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, where it is available in seven different models, including the top-of-the-range Hybrid XLE.

The Honda CR-V compact SUV is the only non-compact or family car in the list of top ten bestselling cars worldwide. Honda’s entry-level SUV, the CR-V has been made at a variety of sites around the world, including the English town of Swindon, since 1995.
